What's Downton Reading?

That's the question I was asked by a producer at Inreads, the "social readia" website launched by WETA, the Washington DC public television, media and radio entity, and the producer of such notable works as the films of Ken Burns, In Performance at the White House and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal.

It was a really terrific assignment—I could have filled the Downton Abbey nightstands from full to overflowing! However, I was limited to about 800 words, including an intro, so I had to ration the number of books I'd recommend. If you're interested, the page will be up on the site for about another week, so go ahead, have some fun with it—share it with your friends and book club cohorts; make your own suggestions and let's see how we'll fill Downton Abbey with books. Heaven knows, they've got enough rooms!
